Colombian President Declares 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' should US Intervenes Militarily.

Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume of their war of words, further raising tensions bilaterally following US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Growing Rhetoric coupled with Accusations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, Trump suggested comparable armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting Colombia is also "very ill" and “run by a sick man who enjoys creating narcotics and trafficking it to America."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the illicit industry.

A Strained Partnership

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the US in the fight combating drug cartels and enjoyed bipartisan support from American politicians, yet ties have worsened dramatically since Trump was elected.

The nation's drug trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions such as the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom demobilised following a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Firm Response

In response to a query whether armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"Trump speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he expressed online.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain the nation's leader, which many of the population admires and supports, they will release the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Leader

He passed part of his youth belonging of the leftist M-19 armed organization although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in writing the constitutional rewrite in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of Bogotá before being elected president.

"I pledged not to touch a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he vowed.

Increased Security along with Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

Several members of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders from across the ideological divide have rejected the possibility of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Political and Economic Pressure

Washington revoked the president's entry visa following he called on American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. Later, in October, authorities imposed economic restrictions targeting Petro, the first lady and several key allies.

Concurrently the US was building up its forces near Venezuela and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed operations on maritime targets in Pacific waters near Colombia.
