A defense minister has revealed that the MoD is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in every modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader security situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from transport use to discussions habits.
